Departments
Main Departments
Sandberg Instituut has five Main Departments. An average of only twenty-five students per programme allows each course to be flexible and open to initiatives from students and third parties. The department heads, who are prominent artists, designers, theorists, and curators with international practices, invite tutors and guests who are able to challenge the students to critically reflect on their profession, their work, and their progress.
Temporary Departments
Each year a new Temporary Department is launched to align art-education with the dynamics of contemporary society. These are full-time, two-year programmes leading to a MA degree in Fine Art and Design. Temporary Departments run in parallel to the five Main Departments but have a single cohort and are topical; researching particular societal issues in order to generate new perspectives and make way for new positions for artists and designers, theorists, organisers, etc.
Compared to the main departments, Temporary Departments are categorised as Research Master's programmes. The heads of the programmes are expected to have been researching and working on the their topic for a substantial period of time before the start of the master. In this way the programme can be seen as a group continuation of this research within an educational environment for two years.
