Acting Queer, Feeling Sensitive

Department

Design

Acting Queer, Feeling Sensitive is a visual kinetic sculpture that investigates a possible queer way of looking. Based on an analysis of image-capture processes, it aims to relate a queer gaze to the photographic process itself. Through the use of backstage photographic materials (tripods, light/monitor arms, monitors), mirrors and live cams, the video sculpture attempts to provoke an interaction with the observer by including them and the act of looking in the displayed scene. The filmed frames are mixed with views of the observer’s gaze, resulting in a visual assemblage split across six different monitors. The soundscape of the video sculpture is generated through a sort of “digital gaze” by using the chromatic values of the pixels that make up the recorded frames.
