Medialab offers students a space to study, collaborate, and experiment with digital, analogue, and electronic media, while exchanging knowledge across disciplines. Located on the fifth floor of the Benthem Crouwel Building, Medialab functions as a shared workspace, study environment, and meeting place for students from all departments at Sandberg. The computer and meeting room is designed to support focused, independent work as well as collaborative processes, encouraging creative stimulation and cross-pollination.
Facilities
The space is equipped with eight up-to-date computers for visual production, all installed with the full Adobe Suite. Two of these systems are extra powerful and intended for complex video editing, 3D applications such as Blender, and intensive post-production in DaVinci Resolve.
On the same floor, the Editing Suite supports focused video editing and post-production, with calibrated screens, fast computers, audio equipment, and tools for digitising older video formats. Shared with the Rietveld Academie, Medialab also includes a well-isolated audio studio for music recordings and voice-overs, and is accessible several days a week. Students also have access to a large-format print workshop and a professional film studio with a chroma key backdrop. A smaller studio/storage space supports analogue and interactive experiments, including electronics, modular synthesisers, and DMX equipment.
The services and facilities are intended primarily for Sandberg students. Due to the programme’s small scale, there is close interaction between staff and students. Given the diversity of student practices and departmental needs, the lab remains adaptable and responsive, offering tailored support where required.
Medialab is run by a team of specialists who are practicing artists themselves. Each brings their own expertise while maintaining a broad understanding of new media technologies. The staff organise and facilitate workshops, lectures, and events, and provide technical advice, equipment rentals, and on-site support. Specific areas of new-media arts expertise covered by based video production:
- non-linear video montage and video image processing
- computer graphics imaging (CGI)
- 2D, 3D, generative
- digital-network art
- web-coding, hacking, AI prompting
- analogue electronic art
- modular synthesis, hardware hacking
- physical computing
- mini-computers, electromechanical kinetics
- audiovisual presentation and exhibition design
- audiovisual performance

Medialab provides technical support for education by maintaining audiovisual installations in classrooms and auditoria and offering immediate assistance when technical issues arise. The team also supports exhibited works and presentations during key institutional moments such as the Sandberg Year Opening, Open Day, the Sandberg Graduation Show, and other student exhibitions and events.
Rentals
A core component of Medialab is its equipment rental service for students and teachers, providing tools for recording, performance, exhibition, and documentation. Staff manage the checkout, returns, maintenance, and repairs, and advise students on selecting the most suitable equipment for their projects. Throughout the two years of study, students can make free use of the rental service, but a small contribution is requested for installations during the Graduation Show.

Lectures & Workshops
The annual programme of workshops and lectures covers video, audio, editing, colour grading, and software such as Premiere Pro, Ableton, After Effects, and Blender, alongside specialist workshops in creative coding, analogue synthesis, hardware hacking, physical computing, and light control. Additional workshops can be requested, and guest teachers are invited when needed. Both alumni and students are actively encouraged to lead workshops and share knowledge, strengthening peer-to-peer learning within the institution.
Medialab continuously researches emerging technologies and associated theories, engaging with new tools based on the needs, interests, and directions of the students.
Communication & Collaboration
Practical information about Medialab, including opening hours, reservations, and workshops, is available at intranet.rietveldacademie.nl
A bi-monthly newsletter shares updates, announcements, and invitations for students to present their work.
Medialab also supports student-led initiatives with technical advice and resources, like PUB radio and Home Cinema.
