DIY medical tools can be realised through Open Source solutions. This can be somewhat misleading, as it implies both an independent and a solution-centric methodology. This audiovisual installation looks at Open Source medical tools not merely as a solution, but takes focus on the problem from which it springs. Why do people, like myself, turn to these options and what are the realities, motivations and possibilities in which we do so?
Hacked medial hardware is interwoven with a community of users and developers and is contingent on the production lines of officially certified products. This work aspires to debunk medical management as rapidly advancing, certified technological and standardised procedures. Disabled people are hackers out of necessity. Self-diagnosis, online research and adapting/hacking of medical tech is common practice for many of us.
Accessibility: This group exhibition does not offer full wheelchair accessibility. Nevertheless, there is step-free access to view the above and a few other works. Disability-accessible toilets are available at Hotel Krasnapolsky, a few doors away from the venue. Visitors to W139 are welcome to use their facilities.
