Valter TornbergMulti-channel video (color, multi-channel sound), 6.50 min, environment How are we producing images of things or beings that we don’t consider (and thus don’t privilege) to be human? ‘Monstrous Things and Old Stuff’ is a reflection on how established ways of seeing and structuring the world are being translated into these images, proliferating hegemonic ideas of normativity, ableism, racism, speciesism, and so forth. It’s no surprise that Gollum’s descent into evil is also portrayed as an extreme physical transformation, in a kind of falling back into a ‘primal’ form of being, or perhaps an ‘animal.’ These are structural things that operate both on the level of production of images, and again when encountering them, further alienating us from the others.
