light sound water vessels

Year

2018

In this project I question whether light and sound are tangible materials. How can an object, (that is not a light source), express light and what is the relation with the new ways to hold and act with the object. I have created a family of pouring vessels made from black and white porcelain. Each object questions light and sound in different ways. The challenge was to cast two colors of porcelain, 2 mm thick, in the same mold and control, by hand, the way these two materials behave. This way I could determine from which part of the vessel light will be revealed and from which part it won’t. The design concept of the vessels lies in the essence of light, sound and water, and not in their function. The shapes refer to traditional ceramic vessels, and was achieved by using a ceramic jigger. In order to manipulate light and sound through the vessels I had to cast up to 2 mm thickness, and take this into consideration so that a vessel that is 20 cm high will not fall. The differences in the shapes affects the way sound of water resonates in the vessels and creates various soundtracks of the ceremony.
